Unexpected Corps of Discovery Treasure Chest

In a few weeks, our new class will become the 2024-2025 Corps of Discovery!  What a thrilling year is ahead of us!

Today I received a teacher’s dream treasure chest of learning excitement from the Bells, one of our upcoming third grade families.  Unbelievable!  They have family connections out in Oregon and have blessed us with some engaging surprises.  Here’s a sneak peek . . . .

Stay in summer mode:  read those books, swim in all the lakes, eat the s’mores, visit the relatives, chase the fireflies, . . . . But know that there’s a GREAT YEAR COMING!

Assateague Island from the Posts

Hello, it’s Kim again!

The kids are on writing strike, it is summer vacation after all!

We had a great time at Assateague Island! Driving in we were greeted by ponies causing a traffic jam, had it been cows it would have felt like home. The ponies truly have the run of the island and we saw Park rangers out trying to move them out of the road, or encouraging them not to loiter in parking lots. One ranger was using a spray bottle of water to love the ponies along, kind of like we do with our cats! Just like our cats, I don’t think the ponies learned their lesson and were likely back in the parking lot that evening.

We started out at the Assateague State Park beach. The beach weather was fantastic after over a week of hot and sticky temperatures and humidity. When we first arrived around 9:30am the beach was almost empty and there was a cool breeze coming off the water. The waves were big enough to be exciting but small enough that we could get past them to swim for a bit. The water was surprisingly refreshing! We learned later from a park ranger that the water is unseasonably COOL right now! It wasn’t as icy as Maine, but still pretty chilly.

Around 10:30, which was also right around the time of the tide change the wind changed and wow could you tell the difference between land air and sea air! All of a sudden it was hot and humid again. We wandered down the beach to find some more ponies and also found a man teaching his grandson about a horseshoe crab. He was happy to show us where the crabs breathe from, and tell us some fun facts about them, like that their blood is blue. I don’t think we’ve ever found such a large horseshoe crab so it was really fun to see it up close.

After a little more swimming we took a break for lunch, talked with another ranger about the different animals we could find on the island and headed off down the road to the National Park section of the Island. Amos and the kids did some more swimming while Oliver napped and I rested in the car. The winds had shifted again so it was great to just sit with the windows open and listen to the ocean. When Oliver woke up from his nap we went clamming and crabbing with the National Park rangers. The kids didn’t get to catch any crabs, but we did find a few clams! McKinley and I both thought we had a clam and when we reached down for it we got pinched by a crab instead! 😬😖 We also got to see a moon jellyfish! I’ve never seen any type of jellyfish in the wild so this was very cool. One of the park rangers was worried about us touching it but once I told her that we had never seen one but knew the dangers she was happy to let the kids look closely and teach them all about what part of the jellyfish stings and the different types of jellyfish.

A local told us that some of the ponies on the Assateague Island are owned by the state. Apparently the state of Virginia auctions off some of the ponies once a year! Amos pondered all day how to get a pony loaded into the van to take it with us but didn’t come up with any workable solutions so he’ll have to get a trailer and head down next year to get one. 😉

This might have been my favorite stop on the trip so far. Ocean, ponies and a state and National park visit with friendly rangers who were happy to teach us about the parks, you can’t get much better than that!

Although we are really grateful to the campground ranger who upgraded us to an air conditioned cabin to get a break from the heatwave, we’ve definitely learned that we prefer the state parks over private campgrounds. It’s hard to pass up the reasonable prices and the knowledge of the rangers who care for the parks!

Forever Friends

Every summer, precious Mrs. Shedd makes a tea party for me, just because she is the dearest sort of friend.  How kind!  How extravagant!  She showers the world with quiet, loving blessings, from sewing stuffies with our class to helping missionaries with VBS supplies.  She exemplifies living out, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)

The Posts’ Road Trip: The Ark and Creation Museum

The ark and Creation museum🌎

Howdy 🤠,

This is the greatly awaited letter, THE ARK AND CREATION MUSEUM (fun dun dunnnnn). Where do I start? ahh yes, when we left Ohio we went to the creation museum, which was about 3hrs away. After the creation museum we went to the ark, after staying in a hotel.

The creation museum

As soon as you arrive at the creation museum you are tempted with the biggest, coolest, most epic playground you’ve ever seen. But we kept moving to the museum. (We did play on the playground at the end of the day) After passing through a gift shop some really impressive gardens and passing a zip lining tower we finally got there. Inside it is the coolest thing ever, there’s a giant fish tank with animatronic people. But once you walk into the exhibits it’s like traveling to a different world. There are dinosaurs, giant trees and rock samples. We stayed inside the museum for at least 4hrs. That is one experience I will never forget.

The Ark

The ark was basically the same as the creation museum but it was on a giant life size ark and was about the ark. The ark was so big that we could see it from a mile away(literally). The best thing was a big screen that showed a little character when you visited one of the Ken Ham websites. It moved to which website you visited and what section you were on (like tickets Hours etc). We tested it with a phone and it worked. We spent a whole day there.

Q&A with Josh (we are at a camp ground without working internet so I will be answering questions here)

Q; will Natalie ,McKinley, Mom, and dad be helping with writing some of the articles? A: Yes they will probably help.
p.s. This picture is of the Mazzola’s dog Buddy. He likes sleeping on the stairs.

Summer Challenge: Make Someone Smile

Do you look for ideas wherever you go?  I do, and this winter I spotted this one.  Pick someone to thank and bless who maybe doesn’t often get thanked.

Our mail carrier is the BEST.  He often brings our mail into our entryway because we have so many packages, no matter how much snow is outside.  He speaks kindly and does his job with enthusiasm.  He quietly makes the world a better place.

So today we declared it “Tony DiNitto Day!”  We all wrote little thank you notes, and we filled a bag with surprises like fun drinks, chips, gift cards, and other treats.  We decorated our mailbox to welcome him, and we gave him a gigantic hug when he came in.

What idea do you have to make someone smile this summer?  Share with us if you can!

Blog Challenge: Bible Study Moments and Growing with God

What have you learned in your study of God’s Word this summer?  So many of you are working toward reading various books of the Bible on your own, which is really exciting.  Many of your families read something together each evening.  Did you go to VBS?

Share something with us that God has been teaching you!  We would love to know!

One thing I love about summer is luxurious, unhurried time to spend with God.

I have been working on my Bible classes for ACSI.  Did you know that all the teachers work hard on their studies during the summer?  We have a lot of learning to do each year to keep up our state license and other things like our ACSI certification.  Some highlights for me have been the class I am taking from Ligonier Connect called “Classics from R.C. Sproul.”  It is a collection of ten of his most famous lessons, and there is so much to think about from each one.  My lesson today is called, “What is Truth?”

I like to sing through the hymnbook each summer during my devotion time, to ponder the words of songs believers have sung for years and years.  The words are wonderful to meditate on.  My hymn this morning was “Praise, My Soul, the King of Heaven.”  “Praise, my soul, the King of heaven. To His feet thy tribute bring; Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Evermore His praises sing; Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King!”

I am reading a Psalm or two each day, from Joshua in the Old Testament, and from I Corinthians in the New Testament.  I am also reading a book called A Long Obedience in the Same Direction by Eugene Peterson about deeper discipleship.  It uses the various Songs of Ascent Psalms to teach us how we can grow in worship, service, joy, work, humility, community, and blessing, a long obedience in the same direction.

I also read one or two entries each day in God’s Wisdom for Navigating Life by Timothy Keller, which is a book of daily devotions in Proverbs.  So interesting!  Last year’s students will think this is cool.  This week I spotted the Proverb where World Watch gets their signature saying from, the one we say at the end of every day’s broadcast.  “Whatever the news, the purpose of the Lord will stand.”  It is from Proverbs 19:21.  “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

The Posts’ Giant Road Trip!

    First stop, Ohio!

Howdy,

We have made it to Kentucky so we thought we’d send out our first newsletter. We started in VT and drove about six hours to a hotel in NY. Then we drove another six hours to Ohio. We had lots of fun. We got to go to family fun Sunday at the Mazzolas’s church and watched Chris make a giant mess by crushing eggs, soda and watermelon! We went to a firework show, and set off some of our own🤪. We also took a hike to a “water fall”. It was more like a trickle of water but the rocks were cool. We got to travel 2 hours from the Mazzola’s to Spencerville Ohio where many of our Post relatives settled in the 1820’s. There are still some relatives living at a house that was part of the Post homestead. We also got to see the original log cabin that the first Post family in Spencerville built.  We stayed in Ohio for 10 days and on Monday we left for The Creation Museum©️ and The Ark Encounter©️. (That will be told about in the next letter.)

Well guess that’s all y’all

What Are You Reading? WHERE Are You Reading?

Summer is such a fun reading time.  Libraries are doing fantastic summer reading challenges.  The outdoors calls to us with lots of gorgeous spots to take a reading break.  Our crazy schedules slow down a bit.  Hooray for books!

So this week’s challenge is to share where and what you are reading this summer.  We would love a photo of you reading in an intriguing place.  Or you could share a Book Talk about a book you loved to tell us why you recommend it.

Mr. and Mrs. Walker are leading the way!
