Introducing our START Volunteers!

What could be better than learning more about poetry with energetic, dynamic, creative Dartmouth volunteers?

Our winter volunteers are Carly, Tiffany, and Clara, and they are ready for action.

Carly is from Baltimore, Maryland, and is majoring in environmental studies and public policy.  She has LOTS of pets, including two dogs, two cats, and a managerie of visitors from her mom’s science classroom such as geckos, hedgehogs, and snakes.  She says, “If you love animals, talk to me!”  Her favorite poem would be any poem about nature.

Tiffany, a senior geography major, comes from Maryland too.  She is an education minor and just took a class on STEM along with Clara, so don’t be surprised to see some poetry STEM popping into some of the START sessions.  She loves to dance, especially hip hop and urban, and she is on the street soul dance team at Dartmouth.  Her favorite poetry book is Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur.

Clara is from Idaho, and she is studying psychology and education.  She participates in theater on campus, and when she is home she loves to hike and read.  Her favorite poem is “The Strength of Fields” by James Dickey.

These marvelous volunteers are overflowing with poetry ideas, and we can’t wait.

Where We’re From

Where We’re From
By the 2nd/3rd Grade Class

As we’ve been getting to know each other, we used George Ella Lyons’ poem, “Where I’m From”, to inspire our own poems. We took a line from each class member’s poem and combined them into a class poem for you to enjoy. Can you guess which line belongs to which person?

I’m from midnight moons and peeping frogs.
I’m from Cape Cod where the waves
Crash down on the sand.
I am from the napping house.
I’m from a mountain,
And smelling my mom’s turkey.
I’m from, “Always do your homework!”
I am from my tree house woods.
And my mom’s chocolate chip cookies.
I’m from my bedroom
Where every day is a new adventure!
I’m from ENERGY!
I’m from holding IV bags during Dad’s operations on a milk cow,
And wishing I could know even a quarter of what my mom knows.
I’m from, “Let’s Look It Up!”
Steak, corn, rice, tacos
Are a feast all together.
That’s who I am—a feast all together.

Delicious Snowfall

It’s an ice cream sundae of a day!
My favorite tasty snowstorm treat.
A steady snow screensaver,
Pat-pat-pattering my jacket.
Filling our valley with vanilla delight.
Bright colors frosted with creamsicle.
Clean,
Fresh.
Awakening my hunger
For the winter world.
Chickadees cheep staccato celebration.
Grumbling plow interrupts muffled air.
After only moments of awed silence,
I am crusted and topped
With New Hampshire whipped cream.
