Vermont Flower Show Essay Contest Winner!

What does “spring reflections” mean to you? The folks at the Vermont Flower Show asked Vermont students that question, and Abigail answered. The entries were judged on criteria such as uniqueness and creativity of thought, passion for topic, and use of descriptive language. Abigail just found out that her essay won first place for the six to nine year old division! She and her family headed to the Flower Show to enjoy a breath of spring and to receive her awards, which included a $50 prize.  Congratulations, Abigail!

A Spring Ecosystem Reflection

Shoots of pink dance through periwinkle sky. The dewy smell of soaked leaves from last fall floats through the air. I hear peepers calling, calling through the evening. Gobbling turkeys are prowling. The speckled deer prance through the fields, hunting for food now that the snow has melted. The spring air smells like fresh pine.

The navy sky shadows the land. Stars are like holes in the night sky. A moon trail in front of me is a path to adventure. What is down it? Nobody knows. The tree’s shadows are towering over me. Coyotes howl, howl, howl in the night. The owls hoot. They are guardians of the night.

At dawn the creek water tinkles by. A rosy sky appears. The stars are very few now. The pine trees are damp with dew. A maple smell floats in the air.

Sunrise birds are stirring. The first one wakes. “Tweet, tweet,” it calls. The sky’s a wonder. It’s deep purple and blue. The grass is jeweled with crystal clear, sparkly dew. The land is covered with diamonds.

Day! The speckled deer prances about. The water flows smoothly over the rocks. A bird tweets. It is singing to the trees swaying in the wind. The baby deer play in the field, celebrating the day.

A cool sunset wind blows. The last of the birds fly to their nests. The rabbits crawl into their burrows. The turkeys fly into the trees to rest. Good night!

Guess what the fourth graders were up to this week! We had our annual Tea Party Celebration, thanks to the amazing kindness of volunteer Doris Shedd. We sipped Constant Comment tea, chatted politely with our class and guests, munched on delicious goodies, and practiced our manners. Here are some of the manners we reviewed as we enjoyed the fun.
