National Day on Writing

We celebrated National Day on Writing CORPS OF DISCOVERY STYLE, with true exuberance!

It all started with our Lewis and Clark plant research, led by our own horticulturist and amateur naturalist, Mr. Pedi.

He introduced each student to a woody plant on our campus.  We participated in mini lessons by each of these special plants, and each student is researching his or her adopted plant individually as well.

So for National Day on Writing, we asked our beloved woody plants to be part of a sculpture!  We investigated the art of nature sculptor Andy Goldsworthy, who uses natural elements such as leaves, sticks, icicles, and stones to create his sculptures.  He photographs them and then leaves them where they are, part of nature.   Our sculptures incorporated our adopted plants in some way, and they were lovely!

Then we wrote beneath our plant.  What could be better than that?

We photographed our sculptures and shared with our fellow botanists.  Soon the students will share their work with you on their own blogs.  Come read!  In the meantime, you might even create your own Goldsworthy sculpture as a whole family project this upcoming glorious October weekend.
