What a Birthday!

What a spectacular birthday!  Many thanks to all of you for all that you did to make the day so special.  I have never seen such a cake as Mrs. Lee’s ocean masterpiece!  Brown sugar sand, candy sea glass, edible sea creatures, and even a pearl!  Oh, my!  The amazon gift card is a great blessing as well and has already helped us with our weather experiments, painting supplies, a new Mercy Watson book, and more.  The best gift of all is every moment with these delightful young people of yours.  Thank you!

Mrs. Fogg’s Great Adventure: Museum of the Bible!

Hi everyone,

This summer I went to Washington DC to go to the Museum of the Bible with a friend. I spent almost 3 days taking in all there was to offer! And there was a lot. What a joy it was to browse through everything! No one was rushing me. I did not have plans to go anywhere else. I was able to see it all. What a blessing to learn more about the Bible and the heritage we are a part of because the Lord has grafted those who believe in Him into His family through His death on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins. (Romans 11:11-31)

The outside of the building was very grand. Here is a picture of the doorway! It was flanked by two gigantic, 40 feet high bronze gates containing the first lines from Genesis in Latin from the Gutenberg Bible!

Floor 1: Grand Hall entry to the museum (check out the ceiling….the display changed throughout the day!), Interactive learning space for children, Vatican Museum and Library special exhibit display.

Floor 2: Impact of the Bible, in America, the world, and now. There was a lot of looking and reading, but also videos interspersed.

Also, a multisensory tour, flying around DC to look at Biblical references around DC! Very cool! Did you know in the Washington Monument not only are numerous Bible verses and religious acknowledgements carved on memorial blocks in the walls, including the phrases: “Holiness to the Lord” (Exodus 28:26; 30:30; Isaiah 23:18, Zechariah 14:20), “Search the Scriptures” (John 5:39), “The memory of the just is blessed” (Proverbs 10:7), “May Heaven to this Union continue its beneficence,” and “In God We Trust”, but the Latin inscription Laus Deo – “Praise be to God” – is engraved on the monument’s capstone.

Floor 3: Stories of the Bible: the World of Jesus of Nazareth was great! These two photos show a Rabbi and builder talking about what they do in Nazareth.

Floor 4: History of the Bible. They have hundreds of artifacts and even real papyrus pieces of the Bible from before the time of Jesus. There is a Drive through History with Dave Stotts which brings the history to life! Check out Drive Through History.  (I have never seen the shows before, but my friend Lisa had seen them.)

Floor 5: People of the Land of Israel which was history and archaeology of Israel.

Floor 6: Manna Restaurant: a dining adventure of historical foods (see photos) , view of DC, and balcony of World Stage Theater where Scripture was read for hours.

Floor B: Special Exhibits: Stations of the Cross Sculptures by artist Gib Singleton & Jerusalem and Rome (almost 200 artifacts from 2000 years ago!!!)

I did not take lots of pictures in the museum because much of it was posted “no photos”, but check out the website to find out more.  Museum of the Bible

If you get to DC, stop in to see the Museum of the Bible. Even if you can only go for a day. It was great!

Enjoy summer everyone!
Mrs. Fogg

Rock On, Mrs. Oberkotter!

To put the crowning touches on our rocks and minerals unit, rock hound Ellen Oberkotter visited and shared her expertise.  She brought samples of all kinds of treasures she has found, and best of all, she relayed a gigantic passion for exploring rocks that was so contagious.

How to be prepared for your rock hunting.

Learning and getting a close up look.

Scientists carefully record the date and location of each rock discovery, which we learned was called the provenance.

Mrs. Oberkotter even generously shared samples of various rocks to add to our own collections.

God’s Sewing Machine

In answer to prayer, God provided a sewing machine for Mrs. Shedd (actually two!).  This generous group of families gave within only a few hours of hearing of the broken sewing machine, and we are celebrating our Father’s goodness.  Mrs. Shedd gives and gives and gives, and she was moved to tears by the overwhelming support of our class.  She now has a new heavy duty machine to keep at school for our heavy duty projects, as well as a beautiful used machine for preparing those projects at home and working on her own home sewing.  Wow.  On its first day, the children prayed and dedicated this machine to be used by the Lord to help many young people learn and to bless many people through the things it makes.  We had a great discussion of how we can use the talents and possessions God gives us to serve Him in all kinds of unique ways.  Then the machine got right to work making ear warmers!
